There is a 55.22-carat ruby that is in the running to become the largest ruby ever to come to auction. If it sells for more than $30.3 million, it will also be the most valuable.

In June of this year, the stone will be put up for auction in New York, less than a year after the Canadian company Fura Gems discovered it at one of its mines in the African nation of Mozambique.

The sale was announced by Sotheby's on Wednesday, and the jewel was described as "exceedingly rare" and "the most valuable and important" ruby that has ever been put up for auction in the market.

Sotheby's called it "the most important ruby ever offered for sale in the marketplace." The name of the stone in Portuguese, which is the national language of Mozambique, is Estrela de Fura, which literally translates to "Star of Fura."

The auction house estimates that the stone will fetch "much more than" thirty million dollars when it goes under the hammer.

In spite of the fact that diamonds, colored diamonds in particular, are driving record sales of gemstones, rubies continue to be considered among the rarest and most precious of all gemstones in the world.

This is due to the fact that rubies are the only gemstone that has the color red. Southeast Asia is where you can find rubies. Rubies remain one of the most valuable and sought-after gemstones in the world.

Rubies are also among the most expensive. The 25.59-carat Sunrise Ruby, which was discovered in Myanmar, now holds the record for the most moneythat has ever been paid at auction for a ruby.

This record was set in 2013. In the year 2015, it was sold in Geneva, Switzerland, for a total of 30,3 million Swiss francs.

The rough stone that was used to sculpt Estrela de Fura was one that had made newsback in July of the year before it was found by miners. This occurred because it was one of the stones that had been used to sculpt Estrela de Fura.

When it was discovered, the ruby had a weight of 101 carats, which is more than twice as much as it weighs today. This made it the largest ruby of gem quality that had ever been discovered. That was the ruby of the greatest size that had ever been discovered.

Before being sold, the enormous stone was reduced in size and given a more symmetrical shape using cutting and polishing techniques. These procedures remove imperfections from a gemstone and bring out its natural color and brilliance.

A report from the Swiss Gemmological Institute stated, according to Sotheby's, that this had "resulted in vivid red hues due to multiple internal reflections."

Stones of such size and quality are "almost unheard of," according to Dev Shetty, the founder, and CEO of Fura Gems, who made this comment in a statement. He added:

From the in-depth analysis and study of the stone — through the process of cutting and polishing — we have worked with the utmost care and respect for the ruby, recognizing its importance and stature.- Dev Shetty
